Common Professions That Require Background Checks

One of the most difficult aspects of living with a criminal record is the fact that if you are subject to a background check for an employer, chances are that it is going to seriously inhibit your ability to get the job. While it won’t necessarily bar you from employment in certain cases, a criminal record certainly isn’t helping you, either. This has always been one of the criticisms of the system, because it has been argued that those with a criminal record may resort to more criminal activity to make a living.

To better understand how a record will affect job prospects, here are some common professions that normally require background checks.

Teachers

Teachers are expected to spend large amounts of time with children, which is the main motivating factor for background checks in this profession. If you wish to join the ranks of the nation’s educators, then having a criminal background is going to be a major obstacle. It might not seem fair, but it is important to understand that these measures are in place to protect some of the most vulnerable people in our society.

Security Guards

This is another common profession where employers will want you to demonstrate a clean record. Although it isn’t necessarily required, you can expect extensive checks from nearly all employers into your criminal background. If you are found to have a criminal record, then chances are that they will be wary of hiring you, since you will be responsible for guarding valuables or personnel. Having a criminal record may make you seem unworthy of their trust, even if your conviction didn’t involve valuables or other property.

Taxi Cab Drivers

If you have a criminal record, it will be difficult to land a job as a taxi driver. While you might not be totally out of the running, it certainly won’t be helping you. Note that the city of Montreal even made it a law for taxi drivers to undergo mandatory criminal background checks.

These three common professions can make great jobs for people trying to re-integrate into society. They are certainly always in demand. Having a criminal record can make them very difficult to obtain, however. There are more common jobs that require background checks, but these are just a few of the most popular.
